Congress Passes Third COVID-19 Relief Package

President Joe Biden signed one of largest legislative bills in the history of the United States to overcome the economic challenges of COVID-19. The American Rescue Plan awards direct payments to US adults in the amount of $1,400 for most earners.

Millions of stimulus checks have gone out to recipients already but there may be a few reasons why yours hasn’t yet arrived. Here are some of the most common issues::

  • Didn’t file a 2019 tax return
  • Didn’t file a 2020 tax return
  • Closed bank account used for last tax refund/payment
  • Not in the current check phase

The IRS has published this about it:

“If you haven’t received one yet, it doesn’t mean you won’t.

Each week we’re sending the third payments to eligible individuals as we continue to process tax returns. Payments are sent by direct deposit or mail as a [paper] check or [prepaid] debit card.”

Social Security Administration beneficiary recipients who are not required to file taxes may not have yet received a stimulus payment, the IRS is working to resolve this. Railroad retirement recipients may find themselves in a similar situation.

Check The Status of Your IRS Stimulus Check

Economic impact payments can be searched on the IRS website. Here are the steps to determine where your stimulus payment is and how much it will be for from the IRS payment tool:

  1. Go to: IRS Get My Payment
  2. Click “ok” acknowledging that you’re visiting a government website on your own behalf and accept the terms.
  3. Enter your social security number
  4. Enter your date of birth
  5. Enter your street address excluding town and state
  6. Enter your zip code
  7. Submit the details

An information message will appear with the current status of your stimulus check and any more information that pertains to your query.

Not Everyone Will Get a Check

Some payment statuses will indicate that no money is due. Those that made more than $150,000 Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) on their last tax return in either 2019 or 2020, stimulus checks will be reduced by $50 for every $1,000 in AGI income. Once a household reaches a combined AGI of $178,000, no stimulus payments will result from the COVID-19 relief bills.

Those who do not have a legal worker status, those in the US on student visas (even if they were working on campus as part of their agreed upon visa) are ineligible for payments. US citizens that did not earn money in their latest tax filing are also ineligible for the stimulus check.

Other Benefits

Among the benefits of this bill, the child tax credit is increased and extended (it was due for phase out.) For this year, families making less than $150,000 combined will receive $3,600 for each child aged up to 17. Those households with a combined income on their 2019 or 2020 taxes of less than $75,000 may be eligible to receive those benefits monthly.

The recovery rebate credit allows up to $10,000 in tax free income from unemployment benefits.
